My name is Mac Frederick. I’m a small town kid who went to Penn State and got recruited by Google to consult with small business owners just like you!

Within the past 5 years I’ve grown my businesses immensely, while also helping hundreds of local business owners grow online as well.

Learn how I scaled my business from $1000 to $100,000 per month in revenue.

Starting in 2016, I was able to grow a Local Service business, Phone Repair Philly, over 100X in recurring revenue to a million dollar business using ONE single trick: LOCAL SEO.

So what’s my story?

Growing up was all about sports for me. I’m from Greencastle, PA (south of Harrisburg) and my childhood was all about athletics and outdoors. When I got older I started buying and selling cards on eBay, but I never heard of entrepreneurship.

Graduating high school was scary. I had no idea what to do next. I took a soccer scholarship to VWC in VA Beach where I played for two years before transferring to Penn State. Once at PSU I changed my major a few times then really got into digital marketing and entrepreneurship. I started a few businesses, an entrepreneurship club, and was very involved on and off campus. I graduated in 2013 and was recruited by Google and moved to Ann Arbor.

After two years at Google I was fired and forced to go all in started my own agency to help other small businesses with digital marketing. So I moved to Philly and started Momentum Digital and Phone Repair Philly. Since then I’ve worked day and night to grow both businesses. These companies are my babies, but only recently did I really start scaling and having success by focusing on SEO, strategy, automations, and business partners.

This is a podcast interview from 2018 with Kevin from Philly Who. During the podcast I explain my upbringing, going to college, getting involved with entrepreneurship, getting the job and getting fired from Google, starting my both my businesses —— and all the trials and tribulations in between. Please watch or listen to learn more about how I got started and advice I have for other business owners.

start my own small business

Starting a Small Business?

Are you thinking about starting a small business? If so, listen up!

Starting a small business isn’t easy. You need to go all in, but before you do you should ask yourself a few questions.

  1. Why do I want to start a small business? What’s the goal?

  2. What sort of life and lifestyle do I want or need?

  3. Am I willing to not make money and go into debt for this?

  4. Do I have a product or service of value that people would pay me for?

  5. Does this align with my skills and passion?

There are dozens of thoughts you should have going Into this. Starting a business is like having a child: it’s a commitment. However, unlike kids sometimes, this can and should be planned. This also must be cultivated and nurtured. You need to go into this with a business plan or strategy that focuses on a few things.

  • How will I start this business?

  • How will I grow and market this business?

  • Am I solving a problem people would pay me for?

  • Do I have the resources to start this (time, money, people)

Do just start a business because you want to. I started my businesses because I can’t imagine ever having a job or working for someone else. I also have skills and passion that align and something I can provide of value that people will pay for.

Working for Google!

Here are the 3 Questions I get the most:

1. How did you get the job at Google?

  • More people get into Harvard than hired at Google. My approach was calculated. The only company I wanted to work for was Google so I reverse engineered the system. I first found the job opening based on my skills and desires and learned everything about it. I optimized my Linkedin and starting connecting with PSU Alum who now worked for Google. My approach was to form a relationship and get advice from them. Eventually that lead to asking for a referral. Then I had them and others prep me for the interviews.

2. What was it like to work at Google?

  • It depends on your job but was overall amazing. I was in Small Business consulting and sales. I worked with thousands of small businesses advertising with Google. It was a fun 9-5 with plenty of perks and benefits. We had full cafeterias, break rooms, arcades, off-site trips, fun events, beer, coffee shops, gyms and more. I loved it and miss it and would highly recommend.

3. How does SEO Work?

  • This is more complicated and not a short answer. SEO uses updated algorithms and machine learning to produce the best top relative and useful results based on the search term and location. There’s many factors involved but if done correctly it can make a big impact for any business.

Tata for now breast cancer fundraiser

Philanthropy - TaTa For Now

Every year for the past 4 years my friend Shana and I have been hosting a Breast Cancer awareness fundraiser. This event is very close to our hearts. A few years ago both our moms were diagnosed with breast cancer. As the cancer progressed it takes a toll on your entire family. This is a tragic moment for everyone involved.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That’s a scary statistic. When we found out our moms had cancer we didn’t know what to do. Then, 4 years ago for our birthdays, Shana and I decided to throw a fundraiser instead. That’s where Tata for Now was born.

in 2017 we partnered with Breastcancer.org to put together a fundraising event to raise money for breast cancer awareness. So every year since we have hosted an event and raised money with BCO. We invite our friends, family, contacts and anyone we think wants to join or help.

Traveling & Mindset

Why are you starting your business? Why did you start your business?

I ask myself this a lot, especially when I’m busy and stressed out. The answer is I started my business to help other small business owners leverage digital marketing. The other reason is so that I don’t have a 9-5 job and can travel as much as I want.

These days everyone wants to travel. People work so hard just to take vacation days and then go right back to work. For me, work isn’t really work. It’s not as stressful as you imagine, especially if you love what you do. Cliche, I know, but not everything I do is work to me. 99% of my days I wake up happy and motivated to grow my business and make a difference.

Having and building my own business has allowed me to create a mindset and work ethic that allows for leisure and happiness.

The past 5 years since starting my business I have traveled a lot.

USA: NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA, San Diego, Seattle, Hamptons, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, DC, Baltimore, Louisville, Austin, Dallas, Las Vegas, Jersey Shore, Pittsburgh, St Louis, Tampa, and way more.

International: Paris, London, Venice, Rome, Munich, Spain, Croatia, Thailand, Mykonos, Greece, Cancun, Tulum, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Toronto and Ontario Canada.
